2007 Gool Kothawala Essay Competition

Friends,  This year we’re going to give you plenty of time to write your essays!

Subjects:

  1. “No, in fact, I’m Zoroastrian” (An unusual personal story about telling a new friend that you are a Zoroastrian.)
  2. What I learned from my grandparent

Essays should be personal and anecdotal rather than theoretical.  MS-Word format preferred (it does the word count as well!)  They should be about 150 words, and should be emailed to vicepresident@ZAGNY.org with Name, Contact number, and Age of participant, on or before Feb 26th 2007

  • Essays will be judged in two categories, the under-10 age group and the 11-15 age group. One first prize of $50 will be awarded in each category. All entries are the property of The Gool Kothawala Essay Competition, and may be printed in future editions of the ZAGNY newsletter.
  • Students must submit original work, and be current members of ZAGNY. Please no “excessive” helping by parents- Judges will detect adult intervention, or paragraphs lifted from the internet, and it will not benefit the contestant.
  • Judging: Contestants names will be masked from the judges. Of course, the judges decision is final.
  • Please email me if you have any questions, at  vicepresident@ZAGNY.org.

Warmly,

Nawaz Merchant
Vice-President, ZAGNY

Congratulations Commander Kurush F. Morris

Dear all,

Commander Kurush F. MorrisI am very proud to introduce one of our own, Commander Kurush F. Morris, as  the first Zoroastrian Commanding Officer of USS Taylor in the US Navy.  Kurush assumed command of USS Taylor (FFG 50) in December 2006. Kurush, we are very proud of your achievements. Kurush and Pashang Patel were the first recipients of the Zoroastrian religious emblem, which encouraged and promoted our “Good Life” program. Kurush is the son of Zhaver and Fred Morris, long time members of ZAGNY, who have moved recently to Jacksonville, Florida. Kurush’s brothers, Murzban and Bezan, also joined the US Navy after graduating from Annapolis Naval Academy.

Thanks,

NYC Marathon – Breakfast Reception, Nov. 4th, 2006

Hello All,

You will be glad to know that 3 Zoroastrians, Jamshed Ghadiali, Firdosh Dotivala, and Sohrab Mirza from LA, are running in the NY City Marathon race this year on November 5, 2006. Please go and cheer them on the race route or watch them on your local TV channel.

New York Zoroastrians have decided to hold a short breakfast reception in their honor on Saturday, November 4, 2006 between 11 AM and Noon. The reception will be held at

150 West End Avenue, Apt. # 9F
New York, NY, 10023

(through the courtesy of Mithoo and Khurshed Birdie).  It is very important to know the number of people attending the reception. It is also very important that we adhere to the time schedule as the Marathon participants have to leave at Noon on that day to attend to other business for the following day.

Please send your name and number of people attending the reception to the ZAGNY President via email to president@zagny.org  no later than November 1, 2006.

Thanks,

Homi D. Gandhi
President, ZAGNY
